Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Last Christmas Was The Perfect Waking Dream

10. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

Last Christmas is a Christmas story in the barest sense of the word. Nick Frost in the guise of Santa Clause is not a necessary story element and yet his performance lights up the screen adding a delightful whimsical touch. It is a testament to the actor€™s aptitude that he does not feel completely superfluous even though the story does not need him to advance. He added a bit of welcome light to an otherwise grim fairytale. It€™s obvious why Santa was chosen as the dream construct but it really could have been any fictional hero embedded in the collective consciousness including the Doctor. The tale is that of a dream within a dream but the joke is on us as the ultimate twist is that what viewers are watching is itself a dream. The viewing audience represents the final layer.
