Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Last Christmas Was The Perfect Waking Dream

4. Sweet Little Lies

Series 8 is built on a foundation of lies. Clara lies to Danny about the importance of the Doctor and lies to the Doctor about her life with Danny. She lies to herself in order to justify her need to deceive others. Danny commits the sin of omission while hiding his tragic past. The Doctor manipulates whoever he pleases to gain what he wants. Last Christmas is the network of falsehood falling apart. The lies must be shredded if people are to survive. Pretense must be set aside even if reality is more painful than the dream. Santa Claus is part of the dream yet he is not a lie as he is a collective concept of strength and goodwill. There is a difference between deception and imagination. Santa is a creative construct, not a destructive one. Good fiction illuminates the truth when it bypasses the limits of reality and asks us to think in a way outside the restrictions of physical experience.
