Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Rose Tyler Is The Definitive NuWho Companion

9. She Brought The Series Back

As far as NuWho is concerned, Rose Tyler is the one that started it all. The first episode of the revived series was even named after her and she served as the perfect gateway into the Doctor's weird and wonderful world for the millions of new viewers that were tuning in for the first time. As such, Rose is often credited for being responsible for the show's rapturous rise to the worldwide phenomenon it has become today. She was one of many contributing factors, of course - the writing and Christopher Eccleston's portrayal of the Ninth Doctor also helped to secure the show as an unmissable ratings smash hit so to give all the credit to Rose would be a somewhat unfair, and simply untrue, citation of misjudgement. Saying that, it was Rose who arguably faced the most difficult job as it was put upon her shoulders to convince an entire generation to step aboard the TARDIS alongside her for the trip of a lifetime. And do you know what? It really was. Over the course of Series 1, viewers ventured hand in hand with Rose and when she laughed and cried, so did they. Fans discovered more about the enigmatic Time Lord through the eyes and ears of Rose and her ever relatable circumstances made it easier than ever before for fans to feel like they, too, were part of the action. She also opened up the TARDIS doors for a new generation of female fans. The series was widely regarding as a "boy's show" throughout its classic run owing to the fact that the Doctor's previous companions were usually one-dimensional and served only to summarise the plot by asking the important, and sometimes not so, questions. But here was Rose Tyler - a fully established and relatable companion in her own right who made the show appealing to a whole new demographic. Girls wanted to be her and boys wanted them to be here, too. It was a win-win situation.
