Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why The Third Doctor Is The Best Ever

10. The Look

Let€™s start with first impressions, as many things do. Like most Doctors, he had a consistent silhouette but the details changed throughout his tenure. For example, the ruffled-front shirt with frilly cuffs was always there, but he accessorised with cravats, bow ties or sometimes went open necked.

Famously, he wore capes and cloaks but they varied in colour, length and style. While his jackets were always of rich velvet they varied greatly, embellished with embroidered buttons and piping. Usually he had smart polished shoes but was also fond of calf-length boots. He also sported a signet ring, though often covered it with leather driving gloves.

The First Doctor described the Third as a dandy and it€™s hard to argue. Whenever he entered the room, all eyes were drawn to him. He would struggle to blend in anywhere but amongst the uniforms of UNIT, he was a neon peacock.

Even his hair grew more elaborate as his confidence grew. He started with a simple parting but graduated to a curled bouffant. From then on, this magnificent blonde barnet crowned him like a halo.

The fact that the Third Doctor was the first to appear in colour probably has a lot to do with his flamboyant outfits. Only the Sixth Doctor has been more colourful and the Eleventh Doctor€™s final outfit was almost as elegant. Jon Pertwee's 'wrong time, right place' ensemble beats them all.

Older than some and taller than most. Grey of eye and white of beard. Stephen's book 'Hiding', about a boy who meets a goblin in a local wood, is available to download from the usual places. Think of it as a scavenger hunt.
