Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why The Third Doctor Is The Best Ever

9. Bessie

For those who don't know, Bessie was the Third Doctor€™s canary yellow Edwardian Roadster, supplied by UNIT as part of his package for becoming their Scientific Advisor. The Doctor €˜borrowed€™ a similar car shortly after his regeneration and was so enamoured with it that the Brigadier agreed to find him something similar.

The Doctor modified Bessie significantly while keeping her outward appearance untouched. She was fitted with an anti-theft force field, remote control and minimum inertia hyperdrive (look it up). She was one of the best looking members of the regular cast and a better actor than some of the others, too. Who could tire of watching the Doctor and Bessie tearing about a gravel pit as explosions erupt all around them?

Besides, which other Doctor has had any car, never mind one so adorable? The Fourth Doctor did tootle about in Bessie occasionally, of course, while the Seventh once took her for a burn, but that€™s about it. The Eleventh did have a lovely motorbike, but it was far too short lived to win our hearts.

The Third Doctor did try and better Bessie with the Whomobile, a flying cross between a dodgem and a Jetson runabout. He only drove it once and regenerated soon after, perhaps due to guilt rather than the accepted diagnosis of radiation poisoning. The world will never know.
