If there was one major criticism of series 8, it was that the show focused a hell of a lot on Clara, and not so much on the Doctor. The companion taking on a bigger role was somewhat understandable, insofar as she was the established presence, and Capaldi was the newcomer, but it did at times feel more like it was Clara Who.

While Clara/Jenna Coleman is great, the main reason people watch the show is the Doctor. He's the big attraction; the headline act. You might enjoy the supporting bands at a concert, or the short films before Disney/Pixar films, but they aren't the reason you're there. It's the same with Doctor Who.

Now that Capaldi has had a year to really find his feet and discover exactly what his Doctor is supposed to be like, he needs to be placed front and centre of the show. It doesn't mean Clara and others can't have a big role to play, but they shouldn't be more prominent than the main man himself in the majority of episodes. Given how much has been given to Clara's story, this may not be one we get fully, but for the sake of the show it needs the Doctor to be the star.
