Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Knew About Series 4 Of NuWho

10. Martha Would Have Been In The Sarah Jane Adventures

As the trio of Hermits United - Martha, Jack and the Doctor - make their farewells, Jack hints to Martha that there's more she could be doing than UNIT. They're soon followed by Mickey Smith - formerly hapless boyfriend to Rose, now a Cyberman slaughtering badass in his own right. Russell T Davies wrote that hand-in-hand-in-hand departure for the trio with big plans for them all, knowing what was going to happen in Series 3 of Torchwood. Martha, who had already worked with Torchwood previously, was set to return for the full run of Torchwood: Children of Earth. Though she stayed with UNIT, Martha would have helped the team spy on the alien negotiations from inside Thames House. However, Freema Agyeman was cast in Law and Order: UK and the shooting schedules conflicted. Martha's role was reduced to a cameo in the first episode, but even that was unworkable in the end. Ultimately, Davies created a new character, Lois Habiba, to fill the same function in the plot that Martha would have served. Mickey, meanwhile, would have been reserved until the final two episodes but Noel Clarke had to drop out for a film role. Freema Agyeman was set to be the first (and, it turns out, only) character to complete the Whoniverse hat-trick by appearing in the parent show and both its spin-offs. Phil Ford wrote the series two finale of The Sarah Jane Adventures Enemy of the Bane with Martha helping Sarah Jane infiltrate UNIT's Black Archive. This also had to be nixed for Law and Order but her place was taken by a Classic Who alum, Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, instead, giving Nicholas Courtney one last glorious turn (in canon) before he passed away in 2011.
