Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Was Out Of Their Depth

4. Facing The Family Of Blood

Doctor Who Midnight

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and that's certainly the case when the Doctor is on the run from the vicious Family of Blood. Pursued across time by the insatiable aliens, the Doctor has no choice but to take drastic action and use the Chameleon Arch to turn himself human in order to hide. It's not often that the Doctor is facing a dilemma so difficult that he simply chooses to hide. It's a surprisingly cautious and sensible course of action from the often reckless and spontaneous Tenth Doctor, proving just how dire this situation really is.

But the Doctor is pushed even further out of his depth when his human form begins to realise what he's got himself into. John Smith is a perfectly happy man without a care in the world, until it is revealed that he is actually a Time Lord known as the Doctor, a hero whose life consists of defeating hostile aliens and saving innocent lives. It's just too much for poor John Smith, and he's completely overwhelmed at the fact that he has to relinquish his pleasant life in order to take on such grave responsibility. But despite being almost paralysed with fear and distress, John Smith shows that he has all the Doctor's courage and compassion when he decides to return to being a Time Lord, sacrificing his ordinary life for a greater purpose.
