Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Was Out Of Their Depth

3. The Midnight Entity

Doctor Who Midnight
BBC Studios

Everyone knows that the Doctor is out of his depth without a companion by his side, and no episode proves that to be the case more than Midnight. Leaving Donna behind to relax in the spa, the Doctor ventures out on a cruise across the planet's hostile surface, along with a group of total strangers. At first, they seem to get on well with the Doctor, but when things inevitably go pear-shaped, they begin to turn against the Doctor and question his authority.

A mysterious, invisible entity infiltrates the cruiser and starts possessing people, causing mass panic amongst the passengers. The Doctor, being the dashing hero he is, quickly attempts to take control of the situation and calm everybody down... except, he can't. It doesn't work. Normally he just gives a heroic speech, takes charge, and people obey his every command. But not here. The cruiser passengers react in a much more cynical way, questioning the Doctor and scoffing at his arrogance. Things spiral even further out of the Doctor's control when the passengers start to suspect that he is possessed by the entity, and conspire to throw him out of the airlock. With the Doctor powerless to stop them, it takes the valiant efforts of the keen-eyed stewardess to save him, otherwise he would have been done for.
