Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Went Too Far

9. Kill The Moon

Kill the Moon is a game of two halves. Or more like, seven eighths. That's because the episode is a complete and utter dud until the last few minutes.

When faced with an impossible decision to either kill an innocent creature or risk the lives of everyone on planet Earth, the Doctor chooses to abstain. Instead of trying to help, he goes on a patronising lecture about humanity making its own decisions, placing this impossible, horrible decision in the hands of his best friend.

Clara, thankfully, ends up making the choice that saves both the people below and the creature inside the moon, but it could have so easily gone another way. The episode ends with one of the most compelling Doctor/companion scenes we’ve ever had, as Clara gives the Doctor the grilling of his life and leaves the TARDIS in dramatic fashion, almost fracturing their friendship for good.

The worst thing about this is that even after Clara explains exactly why what he did was awful, he still doesn’t get it. He still tries to move past it like nothing happened.

There’s a callousness to early Twelve that makes for such interesting television, and makes Series 8 a truly underrated and fascinating series of Doctor Who.
