Doctor Who: 10 Traumatising Monsters That Scarred You For Life

8. The Foretold

The Foretold is not actually a mummy in the traditional Egyptian case. In reality, it was a soldier that died a long time ago and the bandages were the one's used to heal its wounds. To continue letting him battle in the war, advanced technology was put in him. It malfunctioned, so for thousands of years it has been killing without a thought. Classic Doctor Who stuff, really. It was always in the vicinity of a scroll, which was not actually a scroll, but a flag he fought under. What makes the Foretold great is the concept of the ticking time bomb with no warning. It will appear to the weakest it could find. For 66 seconds it can only be seen by the victim chosen. When those 66 seconds are up, the victim has already died. The audience knew when it was about to kill but there was almost no hope to stop it... The best horror monsters of fiction take advantage of the hidden fears of men. Dracula, for example, represents the foreign man who will give women a good time, touching on the fear at the time that it would encourage women to sexually misbehave. The Xenomorphs plays on the fears of rape. The Foretold represents death, just like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees or even the Terminator. It's slow but that only makes it worse, because what will happen next is inevitable... it will reach you, there is no place to go, no place to hide, it will always be there right next to you, and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it. The 66 seconds was actually about seeing one's own death. It has been foretold.
