Doctor Who: 10 Ways To Be More Like The Doctor

5. Take A Look Back At History

The other big theme at the heart of Doctor Who is, of course, history. In fact, originally when William Hartnell was the Doctor, the historical episodes were meant to be educational. That idea has been abandoned over the years. Nonetheless, some of the very best stories have been set in the past – such as Vincent and the Doctor, The Fires of Pompeii, and Big Finish’s The Peterloo Massacre.

It makes sense that the Doctor would travel through Earth history so much, not just because he has the TARDIS, but because the past can tell you a lot about people. Perspective is one of the great advantages of history, which is why it is so useful. Learning about the past is not just fascinating but can help us, hopefully, avoid future mistakes.

History is also a lot of fun to study, just to see where a Doctor Who episode got it right or wrong – spoiler, there were no rock monsters in Pompeii. Again, there are plenty of free resources available to learn about history online, as well as the usual documentaries, television shows and books; many of which aim to be funny as well as informative.
