Doctor Who: 10 Ways To Be More Like The Doctor
4. Attempt the Language - or Learn it Even!
Okay, so the Doctor has an advantage here. He has a built-in translator that makes every alien speak English, in an eerily British accent. He has obviously learnt to speak other languages too though, as he demonstrates in Vampires of Venice when he speaks Italian. Either way, the Doctor always ends up speaking the language of whatever place he visits, which is good practise for any traveller. It is always worth knowing how to say ‘hello’, ‘please’ and other basics when visiting another country. It’s not only useful, but it’s pretty polite too.
There is also a lot to be gained from learning a second language. It helps you understand another culture or country and requires you to learn more about grammar – it really helps to know your verbs from your adverbs when tackling new words. Learning a new language is also easier than ever before with free apps you can download and plenty of foreign films and television available via streaming services. Some DVDs even offer the option of different languages and subtitles, so you can watch your favourite show and learn some new phrases at the same time!
