Doctor Who: 11 Beloved Characters Who Were Only In One Episode

7. Reinette Poisson

Hold the phone. The Reinette Possion? Later Madame D'Etoiles, and later still mistress of Louis the XV? Actress, artist, musician, dancer, fantastic gardener... This uncrowned queen of France encountered the Tenth Doctor back in the Series 2 classic The Girl in the Fireplace and theirs was a rapturous relationship that defied the realms of time itself. It was a Steven Moffat script, after all, so fans should've really seen it coming. To cut a very long story short, Madame de Pompadour was being stalked by the scheming Clockwork Droids who planned to use her harvested brain to repair their damaged spaceship. It all escalated rather quickly after that as they used strategically placed 'time windows' to monitor Reinette's progress, which culminated in the Tenth Doctor visiting her at various points throughout her sheltered life. Because that's just how he rolls, apparently. She ended up falling head over heels for TV's favourite Time Lord (though let's face it, who the hell doesn't?!) but the cause of true love never did run smooth in the realms of Doctor Who, particularly when the recipient of your admiration is a 900 year old alien hailing from outer space. It would've never worked out but it very almost did when our hero sacrificed his future by sealing the time windows using a horse (you really had to be there!) but Reinette eventually ended up dying and left the Doctor a heartfelt letter from beyond the grave in which she poured her heart out and made the rest of us realise just how cruel life can be. It was a fleeting romance (at least it was for the Doctor, since for him it lasted all but a day), but a poignant one nonetheless, as it affirmed that he really is worth the monsters. Speak for yourself, Reinette!
