Doctor Who: 5 Best Versions of the Iconic Theme

4. Jon Pertwee -1974 Theme

3rddocopening Jon Pertwee had two different sequences and then they experimented with the music for an episode. This particular sequence is from late 1973 to 1974, after Katy Manning left the show, and Elisabeth Sladen joined the team. Instead of just seeing the Doctor's face, it starts off with his head and shoulders and pans back, so the viewer sees a full shot of the Third Doctor, with his hands crossed over his chest. His image then becomes a silhouette and zooms out. The music slightly changed, it's heading in the direction of the Fourth Doctor era. People seemed to like this particular sequence better then the first sequence. Plus, it's a darker background, instead of the whole spinning pinwheel of color. With a darker background it can make the whole theme sequence look a bit moody, which is a good thing. By the time Jon was getting ready to leave and Tom was coming in,Doctor Who was beginning to get some pretty dark stories, so it would make sense to have a theme sequence that fit that particular setting.
