Doctor Who: 6 Biggest Dalek Disappointments Of The New Series

2. One Ship Survived

After every battle against them – at least for the first few series – the Daleks were utterly defeated, utterly wiped out with no hope of survival. They were killed off in the Time War, reduced to dust by Rose in her Bad Wolf form, blown up as a result of the Doctor's clone deciding to destroy them in Journey’' End (after they'd become spinning tops). However, each time they managed to escape, often through the excuse of one ship or Dalek surviving. By the time the excuse is given in Series 5's Victory of the Daleks, it seemed more like self-parody than a serious plot point.

A number of fans felt frustrated by the Daleks being annihilated only to return the next series as if nothing had happened. It lessened the stakes somewhat and made the Dalek episodes feel slightly staler and slightly less interesting, as they would be in a similar position to the last time we met them. And the Doctor would show the same surprise that they survived.

It exacerbated the problem that people were having with them returning every series, something that people still have an issue with. The Daleks never went away for a break after their demise, and they returned in a way that nullified the consequences of the previous story.
