From The Three Doctors in 1973 to The Day of the Doctor in 2013, Doctor Who anniversary specials typically feature multiple Doctors butting heads.

But for the 60th, only David Tennant has been confirmed thus far, with Ncuti Gatwa also being teased in our first-look trailer. Though with Gatwa being the Fifteenth Doctor (meaning he comes after Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor), it's hard to say whether he'll have a sizable role in the 60th or not.

So, is 2023 going to be light on returning Doctors? Perhaps. But the far more hopeful scenario is that - as hinted by David Tennant - there are more surprises in store.

Speaking at Fan Expo Boston in August, Tennant admitted that the only reason his return was announced was because he was due to film outdoors, and that there's a lot more exciting stuff "with other people" that was recorded in secret:

“We were slightingly unfortunate (or fortunate) in that we were filming some scenes that were in the public, so it had to be admitted that we were in it. So most of what’s been filmed with other people has all been inside. So, there is lots more coming than people think, which is very exciting."

"Other people" could mean anything, sure, but it does feel like he's referring to Doctors, companions, and other major characters that will get fans buzzing.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
