Doctor Who: 9 Funniest Episodes Of The Revived Series

7. The Curse Of The Black Spot

Amy Pond sword fighting. What more could you possibly want?! Oh, all right then. You get the Doctor talking like a pirate (or at least trying to) and walking the plank in this episode, too, and then Rory Williams dies - again - which should have been heartbreaking but at this point it was just hilariously repetitive. As such, don't feel too guilty if you find yourself laughing at the concept of Amy coming to terms with her husband's umpteenth untimely demise. You're definitely not the only one who finds the whole thing outlandishly farfetched and it was practically already a given that he'd end up coming back to life again (after all, that's just how Rory rolls!) so let's not dwell on how emotional it's supposed to be and just sit back and "yo ho, yo ho" at the faces that Arthur Darvill makes instead. His performance when he's being hypnotised by a floating Lily Cole is pretty funny, too ("Everything is totally brilliant, isn't it!? Look at these brilliant pirates!"). He never did grow that beard... The whole episode is a hoot, really, as the Doctor's encounter with pirates was always going to be. In fact, you get so caught up amidst the camaraderie that you quickly forget the fact that you know Captain Avery so much better as the Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey and just enjoy the swashbuckling escapade for what it is, which is definitely saying something (it's Robert Crawley... on a pirate ship... what would the Dowager Countess say?!). Captain Jack Sparrow, eat your heart out. The good ship Fancy is where the party's really at - just keep an eye out for any wandering Sea Sirens when you're necking back the rum!
