Doctor Who: Every 9th Doctor Episode Ranked Worst To Best

6. The Unquiet Dead

The Unquiet Dead was the first 21st century episode of Doctor Who to travel back in time. So it is only fitting that we are able to visit the extraordinary Charles Dickens in the beautiful Victorian...Swansea.

Moving on from the interesting decision to set the story in Wales (more than likely to satisfy BBC Wales who have produced the revived series since 2005), this episode features one of the best performances of the series with Simon Callow's magnificent portrayal of Charles Dickens.

Another strength of Mark Gatiss's debut episode is the seeming subversion of the always evil alien presence as the Gelth appear to be friendly aliens seeking help from humanity. Having said this, they do ultimately reveal their plan is to invade Earth by forcibly possessing human bodies.

While there are brilliant performances and an interesting villain, the episode feels like it could have done more with utilising Dickens and its setting to a greater degree.
