Doctor Who: Every NuWho Companion Ranked

5. Rory Williams

Donna Noble Doctor Who
BBC

Rory started off as Amy's companion of sorts, but he very quickly rose above his station. Rory was humble, loyal, and had a sarcastic wit that lent itself to brilliant comedic moments. The fact that Rory had a way of being amazed at what's going on, but not to be infatuated with the idea of the Doctor was enjoyable and unique. He wasn't afraid to call the Doctor out, and while he trusted them with his life, he often didn't rely on the Doctor, such as in 'God Complex'.

While he could often fall into the jealous boyfriend archetype, he brought a different perspective to the TARDIS team, and he very quickly became a strong hero willing to risk his life to save people. Another nice aspect is that, unlike with Yaz, Rory's nursing background does come into play throughout the episodes. If in no other way than his motivation to help people everyone, even sometimes the villain of the episode.
