Doctor Who: EVERY NuWho Villain And Monster Ranked Worst To Best

19. Carrionites

Doctor Who villains
BBC

Appear in: The Shakespeare Code, The Unicorn and the Wasp.

You can't really go wrong with having witches as primary antagonists. The cackling Carrionites have got plenty of devilry at their disposal to bring back the rest of their cackling kind for a new empire of blood and magic: whispering wickedly in the ears of the Globe's architect to build the theatre in their design; killing those who got in the way in horrific ways, like drowning on dry land; and potions to bewitch the mind of Shakespeare to make him write the powerful denouement to Love's Labour's Won - bringing about the end of the world.

Christina Cole is luminous as Lilith and just as lethal as her mothers, the brilliantly named Doomfinger and Bloodtide. The Carrionites demise is nicely tied into the mystery surrounding Shakespeare's lost play, and it's funny to think that one of the most highly effective and highly entertaining villains have been rattling around the TARDIS trapped inside a globe (ironically) for all this time.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
