Doctor Who Review: In The Forest Of The Night - 10 Ways The Story Grew

4. The Illusion Of Control

Clara enjoys playing the hero. It€™s not surprising that a person who lost her mother at a young age would derive satisfaction from saving people. It€™s a way of taking back control of a situation where she felt she had none. She can€™t bring back her mother but she can still save lives. Yet a desire to help can easily tip over into a need for acclaim. When Clara tried to rescue Maebh from the wolves she didn€™t see the gate because she didn€™t want to. She was more interested in being Maebh€™s savior than in finding the best way to save her. There are hints throughout series eight that Missy is somehow connected to or even controlling Clara€™s actions. Was Maebh a bit of foreshadowing? The child felt controlled by the voices in her head. Is Clara, perhaps subconsciously, being nudged towards a darker direction? The Doctor may be a liar when the situation is dire and the truth will hurt more than it will help but Clara lies for the sake of lying. She showed no remorse in how she€™s treated Danny, only chagrin at getting caught.
