10. The Hanged Man
We begin with the card of paradox. The Doctor is at times arrogant and cruel. In his quest to solve a mystery he will brush aside the fate of an individual victim in favor of protecting and preserving the whole. Yet these are traits he must have in order to see the bigger picture. He can seldom save the game without sacrificing a few of the players. Its made very clear in this episode that the Doctor has little problem with accepting the inevitability of another persons death. When all his choices are bad, he must be heartless to the few to save the rest. He may lose the entire group but he sees beyond the immediate and looks to the consequences on the rest of the universe. He cannot place a weapon like the Mummy into evil hands. Is this why he hates himself so much? Is he experiencing survivors guilt?
