Doctor Who: The Interstellar Song Contest Review - 5 Ups & 4 Downs

6. UP - Mike And Gary’s Bizarre Adventure

Doctor Who The Interstellar Song Contest Mike and Gary
BBC Studios

Let’s talk about the MVPs of this episode, Mike and Gary. At first, I assumed their appearance was solely a cutaway joke with the Doctor inadvertently causing the breakdown of a relationship – what I didn’t expect was for them to become Fifteen’s companions for the episode. I loved this dynamic, from the realistic banter and chatter between Mike and Gary, to both of them simultaneously crushing on and being terrified of Fifteen.

Was it a little too convenient that these two happened to be genius level pros at the two skills required to save the day? Absolutely, and normally I’d complain, buy I think it’s important that these two weren’t entirely relegated to cheap comic relief and stereotypes in an episode where they seriously could have been in the wrong writer’s hands.

Would not be mad if these two came back, honestly.
