Doom Patrol Season 1 Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
4. It Makes Clever Changes To The Source Material
We'll keep spoilers to an absolute minimum here, but Jeremy Carver's script makes some smart alterations to the source material which heighten the character drama while also updating things for the modern age.
For starters, Robotman's origin story is fleshed out further with an added revelation that only layers more tragedy and shade on top of his already horrific genesis.
Grabbing a lot of headlines already is the decision to make Negative Man a closeted gay man, which only further emphasises the identity issues he suffers from after being horrifically disfigured in his opening plane crash.
There are other changes elsewhere also, all of which successfully add complexity to the heroes in a way that's more relatable for a contemporary audience.
