Emmys 2019: 10 Most Outrageous Nomination Snubs
5. Native Son - Outstanding TV Movie
Similar to BoJack Horseman feeling like its already got one hand on Outstanding Animated Program, Outstanding TV Movie feels like it already belongs to another Netflix smash hit. The gong is Black Mirror Bandersnatch’s to lose, but Native Son still should be in the chasing pack.
Led by Ashton Sanders, who previously played the intensely fascinating teenage years of Chiron in Moonlight, Native Son tells the story of a poor African-American boy brought into a world of wealth once he gets hired as a chauffeur in Chicago.
However, it does much more with the concept than surface level white/black driving narratives like Green Book or Driving Miss Daisy. Native Son strikes deep at the heart of race relations in America, and takes several dark and sordid turns.
Again though, the nominations here are slightly irrelevant. Whatever you think about the overall quality of Bandersnatch, the concept and ambition has to be lauded. With several different endings, various twists along the way and a near seamless integration of multiple choice scenarios, Bandersnatch was the television event of the year.
How lasting its impact will be remains to be seen, but it’s a massive front runner in a category which is often a bit weak.
