7. Elseworlds

The Flash vs Arrow
CW

We didn't know at the time that Elseworlds would essentially serve as a backdoor pilot for Crisis On Infinite Earths, but in a way that's exactly what it was, introducing us to The Monitor while dropping the breadcrumbs of battles yet to come. That said, it was certainly its own unique (emphasis on unique) entity too.

With the Book of Destiny having swapped Oliver Queen and Barry Allen's lives, they turned to Kara for help because Earth-38 wasn't affected by the rewritten reality. A wise decision no doubt, because they ended up taking on John Deegan's reality-writing book with the support of the Girl of Steel, Superman and, for a moment, new arrival Batwoman.

Elseworlds unexpectedly thrived on its humour, gifting us with plenty of great light-hearted moments as Oliver and Barry attempted to convince their loved ones of their true identities. That didn't, however, prevent it from telling an edge-of-seat tale that was capable of taking its plot seriously when it needed to and it ultimately excelled because of its ability to do so.

As it went on, the stakes increased and that made the final battle, and Oliver's mysterious promise, all the more engaging. The cinematography was particularly impressive too, as Gotham City's introduction was beautifully twisted, while the sight of John Wesley Shipp back in his legendary Flash suit from the '90s TV series was enough to make any DC fan's heart happy.

It would have been nice to see the Legends involved, and it could have done without all of the predictably melodramatic Oliver/Felicity drama, but other than that, Elseworlds was a bizarre, oddly hilarious and goosebump-inducing adventure that absolutely lived up to its name.
