1. Philbert

In terms of critical acclaim, Philbert was arguably BoJack Horseman’s biggest success as an actor. Though it started as a non sensical show with toxic masculinity to spare, Diane’s influence as a producer to make it less sexist worked perfectly.

Gina went from playing Sassy Malone, a character whose main personality traits were that she didn’t like bras and loved cold rooms, to becoming a star with genuine Emmy buzz. It was immediately picked up for a second season by Todd and whattimeisitrightnow.com, but it wouldn’t last. Even if Henry Fondle, Todd’s sex robot that worked its way to the top of the company hadn’t caused the folding of the network, Philbert was on rocky ground anyway.

After a video emerged during shooting of season two of BoJack actually strangling Gina when he couldn’t tell the difference between his real life and his character, the show was likely always on borrowed time. What Philbert ultimately became, was a vehicle with which people like BoJack could connect with the titular character in all the wrong ways.

Because he was a protagonist who had done awful things, it made the awful things the viewers did okay. Maybe it was a good job the show was cancelled after all. It sent out completely the wrong message, even if it was widely believed to be the best thing BoJack ever appeared in.
