Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best
21. Sally4Ever
Julia Davis’ latest undertaking is perhaps her most bonkers yet, with Davis writing herself into another utterly unredeemable lead role. She plays Emma, a confident and freewheeling woman who meets and becomes infatuated with Sally (Catherine Shepherd), a shy and unsatisfied office drone in a tedious relationship.
Emma seduces Sally, and from there inserts herself wholeheartedly into her quarry’s life. She moves into her house, turns her existence upside down, and insists that the pair are deeply in love; Sally, too reserved to argue, goes along with it.
Davis plays Emma perfectly, maintaining a degree of ambiguity to the character: does she genuinely believe she’s found love, or is she simply a monstrous opportunist? Setpieces include an episode on a film set and a corporate getaway, both of which are painfully funny and often downright disgusting.
Even more than Camping, this comedy of cruelty isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s often downright hilarious.
