25. Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie

Blackadder Series 2
Universal Pictures

This 1997 film release falls into a familiar trap, whereby a much demanded film based on an incredibly popular television series struggles to make the jump to the big screen. Coming straight off the back of the end of the show, much was expected, but it is generally agreed that the content of the film is desperately overstretched to meet a longer running time.

Some fans of the series also complained about re-used elements from the show, including the head in a turkey scene which would itself be, frankly, stolen by Friends a year later.

The performance is of course prime Mr. Bean, having somehow gained employment as an art gallery security guard, he is let loose from his traditional UK home and begins to wreak havoc in Los Angeles.

There are some classic fish out of water moments, including being too embarrassed to correct hospital staff who mistake him for a surgeon, a misunderstanding of the middle finger gesture, and an unforgettable amateur restoration of the painting, Whistler's Mother.

Universal Pictures would have another crack at a feature length Bean film with the 2007 revival, Mr. Bean's Holiday, which is largely felt to be the superior picture, although both struggle to recapture the simple magic of the TV series.
