Everything We Know About Doctor Who Season 3
2. Other Streamers Are In Contention For Doctor Who Season 3
Let's turn to the rumour mill for a moment – although it does also feel like something of an open secret that Disney will not be renewing its deal for the show. But until we get official confirmation either way, anything is on the table.
According to prominent movie scooper DanielRPK, "Doctor Who is only dead at Disney, but there are active talks to revive it elsewhere, and things are looking promising."
Now, it must be pointed out that while DanielRPK was the one who first shared details of that aforementioned original Season 2 ending – which, again, was then seemingly corroborated by the mother of Poppy's actress, plus that image of the Doctor and Belinda at a party – he also claimed that an Eighth Doctor series was in the works and even got as far as costume fittings and sets being built, only to be cancelled when Season 1 "didn’t do well."
Not only is it hard to believe that a spinoff got THAT far into production before being canned (not to mention the fact that the Disney deal was reportedly only for two seasons, plus The War Between the Land and the Sea), but this claim was then publicly mocked by someone who actually works on the sets for Doctor Who.
All this is to say that any reports from scoopers and leakers should always be taken with a large pinch of salt, but at the same time, it’s not really that unreasonable to assume that other streamers are in talks to acquire Doctor Who, is it? If Disney was renewing the series you’d surely have expected an announcement by now, months after the broadcast of The Reality War. And if they’re not renewing, then it behooves the BBC to shop the show elsewhere.
Other rumours have suggested that the BBC is already in talks with a new partner on the scale of Disney, while a different Twitter leaker – so again, pinch of salt – has claimed that both Netflix and HBO Max are in contention.
All this being said, Russell T Davies has recently indicated that talks between the BBC and Disney are still ongoing, saying that:
"There's nothing to report, nothing's happening, you'll know when we know. I don't know because conversations are between the BBC and Disney."
As for who we would go with? Well, we recently had a discussion covering the most likely candidates for Doctor Who’s new streaming partner, so make sure you give that a watch if you haven’t already!
