Fear The Walking Dead: 6 Reasons To Be Excited

2. Original Characters

Those of us who have read Robert Kirkman's comics know that The Walking Dead doesn't tend to adapt its characters spot-on as presented in the source material. Most times, character changes are for the better, such as the fleshing out of ones like Hershel or Carol. Others, though, end up severely disappointing for fans, like the show's treatment of comic badass Andrea.

Fear has the benefit of having a cast comprised entirely of Daryl Dixon-like creations; that is, characters made from scratch without any ties to the comics or expectations on their shoulders to live up to their comic counterparts. Rather than being under scrutiny over whether or not they've been successfully adapted and being forced to carry all the baggage that comes with such debates, Fear's characters have an entirely blank slate to evolve from.

The strength of the characters will have to come solely from a place without the gift of source material, allowing the characters to sink or swim on their own without being constantly judged through the lens of their success or failure as adaptations. Their personalities, their characters arcs and even their fates are thoroughly up in the air, which immediately cranks up the tension in ways that a handful of The Walking Dead's characters will never live down.
