Game Of Thrones: 10 Most Outrageous Fan Theories You Won't Believe
4. Hodor
Hodor, slow of wits, stableman for the Starks, carrier of Bran and unwitting vessel for his warging abilities, unable to say anything other than ‘Hodor’, but is there more to him?
(Hodor.)
Firstly, Hodor isn’t actually his name; it’s Walder. So why does he say Hodor?
The theory is that he is named after the Norse God of cold and dark, Hod (or sometimes Hoder/Hodur). This is similar to the Great Other, a god in A Song of Ice and Fire who is also the God of the cold and dark, and is someone Melisandre, who worships the Lord of Light, is afraid of, and dares not speak the name. Could that name be Hodor?
If so, then Hodor saying it repeatedly is because he’s an agent of the Great Other, sent to do his bidding, and thus a natural enemy of the Red Priestess. The theory continues that the Great Other is trapped within the Stark crypts at Winterfell, and it was here that he encountered Walder and was able to warg into his mind, the part Bran cannot access, and has used him ever since, including being able to enter the caves that serve as home to the Children of the Forest.
Hodor.
