Game Of Thrones: 15 Moments That Pissed Off The Fans
6. Jaime And Tyrion Say Goodbye
At the end of Season 4 finale, The Children, we see Jaime help his brother escape the dungeons - and with it, execution - before Tyrion goes on to murder Shae and his father. It’s a nice scene between the two, as they hug goodbye knowing they probably won’t ever see each other again.
In the books it plays out rather differently. Jaime informs him that he lied about Tysha, the woman Tyrion loved, being a whore, and that she really did love him, but Tywin had concocted the story to teach Tyrion a lesson. This leads to Tyrion swearing revenge on his siblings and father, and is the main reasoning behind him going on to kill Tywin.
Leaving this out in favour of a happier farewell may make some sense in trying to establish Jaime as more of a heroic character (although that’s something they’d already spoiled in Season 4), and also the fact Tysha hadn’t perhaps hadn’t been mentioned enough for it to really hit home. But the scene in the books is stronger, and would have made for better TV as well, and without it, Tyrion’s motives for killing Tywin aren’t really as clear.
