This is the big question. So far, the the White Walkers have been made out as the enemy, the Big Bad of Game Of Thrones. To be fair, their actions up until this point do back this up. They've attacked the Night's Watch, turned children, raised the dead, and generally seemed up to no good. Do they just want to conquer the South for the sake of ruling the world? There's a lot to counter that idea, most obviously why now? What has happened to bring them back after 8,000 years? One theory suggests it's due to the awakening of dragons, although this ignores the years of dragons at the height of Valyria. One other possibility is that they have been stirred by the God, the Great Other, to combat the rise of R'hllor, whose presence is being felt more keenly across the world thanks to Red Priests and Priestesses such as Thoros of Myr and Melisandre. Perhaps they're even the real heroes of the saga, and want to save the world, not protect it. Only time will tell what their true motives are, but it's obviously going to come down to Ice and Fire. There might even be a song about it. What are your thoughts on the White Walkers? Evil villains or misunderstood heroes? Share your thoughts in the comments.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
