Game Of Thrones: 8 Potential Spin-Offs (And How They Might Work)

5. Tourney At Harrenhal

Doom of Valyria

Something that would be fantastic to see would be adaptions of smaller, standalone George R. R. Martin tales, essentially TV “specials” that last around ninety minutes and depict an entire narrative. One of the ways this might work could be to focus on stories than aren't as huge in scale, but still offer a glimpse into Westeros' past and tell an interesting tale.

The tourney at Harrenhal was an event hosted by Lord Walter Whent to celebrate the name day of his daughter. Held over the course of ten days, the tourney was known for being the greatest of its time, a lavish event with prizes so luxurious that hundreds of challengers arrived. The story contains light-hearted action in the form of tournament melee but also an undercurrent of political tension, as Varys warns King Aerys II that the whole thing is just pretext so that Rhaegar can meet with various high lords to discuss removing his father as king.

Featuring Varys, a young Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen, there are enough characters from the Game Of Thrones universe to substantiate a meaningful connection, and the whole thing ties directly into one of the most prominent Thrones fan theories, R(heagar)+L(ynanna)= J(on Snow). Rhaegar wins the tournament and chooses Lyanna Stark as the new queen of love and beauty, prompting his abduction of her a year later when she's betrothed to Robert Baratheon, which kicks off Robert's Rebellion. Given the significance the tournament has on the events of Game Of Thrones, an adaptation could be extremely meaningful, especially since the show is beginning to explore Lyanna's kidnap a bit more through Bran's visions.
