10. Daenerys

Were it not for the fact that she was side-lined for way too long exploring the finer points of diplomacy and democracy while the rest of Westeros got its sh*t together, Dany would be one of the very best characters in the whole show. Think back to the end of season one (after she'd partially cast off the victimisation of her brother and her new husband), and you see a picture of a burgeoning power, armed with three dragons who seems to get stronger when you set fire to her.

Since then, she's shown flashes of her furious brilliance, with her dragons and her unfeasibly large armies in tow, but being stuck in Meereen was so ruinous for her image that she then literally had to relive her own origin story as a Dothraki slave to get into a position where she's a bad-ass again.

Long may it continue - and since it looks like she's going to be cutting a fiery swathe through her enemies very soon, it probably will. She's set for a leap up this ranking this season, that's for sure.
