Game Of Thrones: Power Ranking Every Major House

5. House Frey

Game of Thrones Houses
HBO

Status: Active

Remaining Family Members: Too many to name

Family Members Lost: Joyeuse, Walder, Black Walder and Lothar

Not many people are hated in Westeros (by citizens and fans) more than Walder Frey. The arrogant and cruel Lord of The Twins and Riverrun has earned a reputation for betrayal and treachery.

The Frey family had remained virtually intact until the closing moments of the sixth season. The only member of the house to die onscreen was Lord Walder’s eighth wife Joyeuse. During the Red Wedding, Catelyn Stark takes the poor girl as a hostage hoping to stop the slaughter. When that plan fails, she slits Joyeuse’s throat before suffering the same fate moments later.

With the Tullys and the Starks virtually extinct, Walder Frey is given control of the Tully stronghold of Riverrun. After the sons he puts in charge of the Riverlands lose the castle to the Blackfish, he is able to take the castle back again with the help of the Lannister army. With that victory further cementing the relationship he has with the Lannisters, Walder Frey feels invincible.

Unfortunately for Walder, he is the first name crossed off of Arya’s kill list upon her return to Westeros. After killing his sons Lothar and Black Walder off screen, Arya serves them up in a sandwich for Walder to eat. Upon learning that he is eating his children, Arya exposes her true identity to him before taking her revenge for the Red Wedding, and making Game of Thrones fans jump for joy.

Prospects For The Future:

Even without Lord Walder, the Frey family remains in a good position. He had several children and grandchildren to carry on the family name. The largest problem facing the family is who will take over leadership of the house. With dozens of descendants and several of them claiming to be next in line, the Frey family may be in disarray for a while before Walder’s successor is named. Once that happens, the family’s ties to the Lannisters and their claim to Riverrun will leave them with a large army and vast lands to oversee.
