No family in Westeros has made fans shed more tears than the Stark family. From the first season shocker to the tragedy at the Battle of the Bastards, Starks have been dropping like flies throughout the series.

The first casualty of George R.R. Martin is the venerable Eddard Stark. The patriarch and Lord of Winterfell, his naivety and faith in the honor of others led to his imprisonment and beheading. Following the removal of his head, his entire family are considered traitors and criminals due to eldest son Robb Stark’s march toward the capital. After what appears to be a successful campaign and impressive string of victories, the hearts of fans are ripped out as Robb, his wife Talisa, his unborn child, and his mother are all cut down at the Red Wedding.

It ended up taking Martin a few more seasons to kill his next Stark, the youngest of Ned’s children Rickon with an arrow through the heart, courtesy of the villainous Ramsay Bolton.

The remaining Stark family includes Brandon, Sansa, Arya and Jon Snow. While fans know that Jon is in fact a Targaryen, he is still half Stark (on his mother’s side) and is currently the King in the North.

Prospects For The Future:

After a long and tumultuous time without a home or power, the Starks have returned to Winterfell, and their current head has been named King. Even if the rumors pan out and Jon discovers his true parentage in the next season, he is still half Stark and just as capable of ruling the North and serving as the first line of defense against the White Walkers.

With the return to the seat of their power, and an assassin (Arya) and Three-Eyed Raven (Brandon) by their side, the Stark family has a bright future ahead.
