9. The "Death" Of Mance Rayder And Samwell Breaking His Vows
In A Dance With Dragons Mance Rayder is burned alive by Stannis to feed the god Rhllor, but Mance doesn't actually perish, as Melisandre uses her magic to make another appear as Mance. Mance has a lot of potential and his abrupt death early in the fifth novel came as a huge shock, but his eventual survival came as an even bigger shock so expect shocks aplenty in the fifth season. With Stannis army reaching the Wall at the fall of season four it is a given that at some point in season five "Mance" will meet the flames. Mances apparent demise feeds another important story - that of Samwell, who travels to Oldtown with Gilly, Maester Aemon and the infant son of Mance Rayder (with Gillys child sickeningly taking on the role of Mances son back at the Wall). Upon their voyage Aemon dies, Samwell and Gilly become lovers, and Samwell crosses paths with Arya. What fans are likely to see in the coming season is a broken Mance shielding beneath the skins of his six spearwives. This sickly scene will go up there amongst Game of Thrones most chilling scenes to date, surely. Also awaiting viewers is Samwell struggling after breaking his vows by showing a lot of inner turmoil. Both stories will likely reach a head this coming season.
