Game Of Thrones Season 7 Implications: What "Stormborn" Really Means
7. Jorah Is On The Way To A Cure (And Sam Is Screwed)
Despite Archmaester Ebrose basically suggesting that Jorah is dead meat and will lose his battle with Greyscale within six months (along with a veiled suggestion that he ought to just kill himself), his fortunes took a turn for the better when Sam decided not to give up on him as easily.
While admitting that he's been accessing the forbidden section of the library - a confession Ebrose casually ignored for some reason - Sam mentions that he knows of a possible cure for Jorah and goes about enacting it, despite Ebrose's misgivings. That results in one of the most cringe-inducing sequences in the show's history, as Sam agonising peels off Jorah's infected flesh (starting, sadistically, with his bloody nipple) and applies a special ointment.
Putting aside the silliness that such a terrible disease can be cured by a simple cream, it's a great moment, as it puts Jorah on the path to full health again. You know, until he dies to save Dany inevitably.
More importantly, it also puts Sam in Ebrose's firing line: how exactly can he hide his defiance when Jorah suddenly turns up healed? It seems likely this will see the end of his studies in the Citadel when Ebrose finds out. We can probably expect him to head back up North to Winterfell soon enough in disgrace.
