Game Of Thrones Season 8: 15 Stupid Blunders That Completely Ruined It
13. Episode 3's Plot Armor
Going into season 8’s much-hyped third episode, The Long Night, there were expectations of major character deaths occurring. Okay, so most of them would be supporting characters – like Eddison Tollett and Lyanna Mormont – and no one believed main players like Jon, Daenerys, Tyrion, Jaime, Sansa, or Arya would bite the dust, but everyone else was pretty much fair game.
There were five characters in particular whose deaths seemed inevitable: Brienne, Grey Worm, Jorah, Theon, and Tormund. And how many of that group actually died? Two. And the others not only survived the long night, but all of them were still alive at the end of the series. Why?
Brienne’s arc was DONE. Tormund could have died a hero. Grey Worm could have died a hero. Instead, they live because of their "plot armor": Brienne apparently needed to stay alive to sleep with Jaime so he could just leave her; Grey Worm stayed alive to watch Missandei die and go berserk; and Tormund stayed alive…to be heartbroken by Jaime “stealing” Brienne?
As for other characters, as much as Samwell Tarly is great, his survival made no logistical sense given the circumstances. Not that we wanted him to die, it's just that he had no business being on the frontlines in the first place, and if he wasn't such a beloved character, he would've been torn apart by wights in the first 20 minutes.
