Game Of Thrones: The Meaning Behind Every Episode Title (Season 4)
Episode 6 - The Laws Of Gods And Men
After what seemed like an eternity, we finally get to see Tyrion's trial for the murder of Joffrey, which is of course what the title alludes to. This episode highlights just how open to corruption the supposed "Laws Of Gods And Men" are in Westeros, with viewers having the gift of hindsight to refer to what actually occured, in comparison to how the same events are portrayed in the trial, with quotes being taken out of context, manipulated, and even downright invented, throughout this very one-sided trial. The title, in this sense, is used to juxtapose how these laws and the system used are seemingly infallible, yet are still clearly at the whim of the powerful - in this case Tywin and Cersei - to twist in whichever way they see fit. One of these laws is also invoked by Tyrion, in a final twist at the end of the episode, when he demands a "Trial by combat", whereby each side chooses a champion who will fight for them to the death; the winner being the innocent party in the eyes of the Gods.
