Hannibal Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

2. A Mini Series Event?

Anther angle that Bryan Fuller seems to have been pursuing is that of a mini series event. This format has been highly successful over the years, with many productions opting for a shorter run, often due to budget constraints and nervous studio investors, both of which seem to be key factors in getting Hannibal back to the screen.

Elements of the cast also seem keen on this format, as opposed to a traditional movie presentation. Mads Mikkelsen stated in an interview with Digital Spy in 2016: "I won't say no to anything but I think the TV medium for the story of Hannibal works so well... It's not something you can do in an hour and a half." Fuller weighed in on the format too, saying in a 2016 Shock Waves podcast that: "I think ideally for the cast, it would be a mini series, here and there. Let's do six to eight episodes of that, and six to eight episodes over here. And do it as an irregular thing."

With an 'event' style release, the producers and the cast retain a certain amount of freedom with their respective schedules and can freely pick up the project when best suited.

That said, Fuller and company seem keen to stick to the original format and Mikkelsen agreed, stating to Digital Spy: "Because of the time we had, we could go slowly, reveal our ghosts in the closets later on... Sure it would be easy to make an interesting film but I think the medium we have chosen was perfect for what we wanted to do."
