The characters have real problems and deal with real issues, but they're presented as rather harmless. Thanks to that the show manages to successfully cover said topics and discuss them with more honesty. The consequences of the characters' actions may be very real, but still they're presented in an non-offensive way.
That's not to say that Ansari and Yang trivialize problems, they just focus on their not so obvious, more everyday aspects. Thanks to that they not only avoid pathos, but create an almost stress-free mood, which allows for deeper issue/character exploration.
Yes, Master of None is a sitcom and it has to follow a certain formula. It has to contain problems that are created, presented and solved during the span of one episode. This also allows to show to preserve it's innocence when discussing more complicated issues.
