How I Met Your Mother: 10 Episodes Proving It's Past Its Best
7. The Magician's Code
The two-parter episode itself was actually awesome. We saw the birth of baby Marvin, Ted and Robin reconcile from the ugliness of "No Pressure," we saw what was behind that door, and we saw Barney get engaged to his mystery bride... wait a minute. The last two seasons have been touting a mystery wedding that apparently was at the end of a very rocky road. We were first introduced to it in the sixth season premiere as if it were Ted's wedding, but then we found out he was simply the best man at the wedding on the day he met the mother. Then, in the season finale the groom was revealed to be Barney. A year later, in The Magician's Code, Barney and Quinn got engaged and we thought the wedding debacle was settled, until the final moment of the season when we found out that the mystery bride was... Robin? A wedding for Barney Stinson, the insecure womanizing manchild who slept with over 200 women on a grade school dare, was earth shattering for the show's continuity enough as it was. So when the mystery bride turned out to be Robin, who'd sworn off marriage since the very first episode when Ted first chased after her, there were further shockwaves. The entire foundation of the show was compromised and many fans like myself were surprised but not entirely happy, but despite their flaws, their history and the show completely jumping the shark here, Barnman and Robin turned out to be a pretty damn good couple.
