6. Dragging Out The Wedding

Season eight ended with the gang heading to Farhampton for Barney and Robin's wedding, and a series of revelations occurred around that. Marshall and Lily were set to spend a year in Italy, but then Marshall was offered a judgeship in New York. And Ted, still struggling with losing Robin to Barney, had accepted a job offer in Chicago and was planning to move the day after the wedding. Plus in the final moments of the season eight finale ("Something New"), we were introduced to Cristin Milioti as Tracy (the Mother), buying her ticket for Farhampton. We had the makings for a pretty good opening with that set-up. Would Ted still move to Chicago in the wake of meeting Tracy? Would Marshall stay in New York while Lily goes to Italy, or would one sacrifice their dream for the other? How would Barney and Robin's first year of marriage progress? Barney and Robin's wedding should really have been a two-part season premiere or they should have spent five episodes at Farhampton, tops. The story opportunities after the wedding were far more intriguing than story opportunities set in the days before the wedding. But instead, we got twenty-two episodes at Farhampton, with stories that weren't even a fraction as interesting as the other possibilities mentioned. And that of course led to...
