How I Met Your Mother: 7 Mistakes Made In Season 9

3. Breaking Up Barney And Robin

Even though the show was about Ted's journey to meeting Tracy, it can be argued that the story of Barney and Robin quickly took over the series as the far more interesting tale. And of the five stars, none evolved as much as Barney and Robin did. Massive credit is due to both Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders, as their portrayals of these two characters has been a joy to watch, not to mention their incredible on-screen chemistry together. It's easy to see why Barney and Robin quickly became the breakout characters of the series and certainly came as no surprise that these two were meant to be together. But then in the finale, all the wonderful development the two underwent was just thrown out the window in favor of a contrived ending that no longer fit them. While it was nice to see Barney changing after he had a daughter and her becoming his "true love" in a sense, what about all the other growth he went through? From his first relationship with Robin to Nora and Quinn and then his realization that Robin was who he wanted to be with, Barney evolved so much from the womanizing conman we were introduced to in the first episode. And Robin, herself a commitaphobe who was so driven by her career that she put it ahead of everything else. A woman who had no desire to have kids or even get married finally found she did want a commitment with Barney. Then once that relationship ends, she goes right back to her career, forsaking even her friends. To undo everything the show had built up with Barney and Robin as just one quick story point in an over-crammed episode was a disservice to the fans and the characters.
