How I Met Your Mother: 7 Mistakes Made In Season 9

2. Killing Tracy

It's been speculated for some time that the show would end with the revelation that Tracy was actually dead. Throughout the show, future Ted (voiced by Bob Saget) continually speaks of Tracy in an almost-mythic way. She was the be-all, end-all€”seemingly perfect in every single way. People usually only speak that way of their loved ones in such a manner once the loved ones have passed. However, Ted has also consistently been portrayed as a hopeless romantic, a man who would speak of the love of his life in that way, so it could have gone either way. But it wasn't so much Tracy's death that was the issue, it was how it was handled. The show was about more than just Ted and Tracy first meeting, it was about the person Ted first had to become before he was ready for Tracy. We see Tracy, we see the potential for her and Ted to be a good fit, and we see some brief interactions that show Josh Radnor and Cristin Milioti have the right chemistry together. But we never get to see their relationship, not really. We're only given these quick glimpses when in reality, the final season should have been all about how Tracy integrates with the group and especially how she deals with the history between Ted and Robin and their continued friendship. Instead, all of this is treated as a footnote, as is Tracy's death. Only a few minutes are devoted to this extremely devastating turn of events in the show. We spent eight years wondering who Tracy was, one year just barely scratching the surface of who she is, and then all of it is just tossed away in a few minutes. Tracy becomes a footnote in the story that was supposed to be about her. But even that wasn't as bad as what came next...
