48. The Dance Of Dragons (Season 5, Episode 9)
Typically, the ninth episode of a season of Game Of Thrones is considered to be the best because they either feature a shocking main character death (Seasons 1 and 3) or an epic battle that rivals most war movies (Seasons 2 and 4). However, by springing the White Walker invasion an episode prior, The Dance Of Dragons broke the conventional formula, and included a horrifying death that not even book readers saw coming. Princess Shireen Baratheon was burned alive at the stake while her father, Stannis, watched and did nothing to address her screams and pleas for help. Many Thrones fans were angry and thought that this was out of character for Stannis, who had just proclaimed his love for his daughter earlier in the season. Not even the final scene of Dany riding her dragon could make up for the bitter taste Shireens death left.
